Join us at the SCAR 2024 Open Science Conference!
The Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research (SCAR) 2024 Open Science Conference will be held from August 19 - 23, 2024 in Pucón, Chile. PSECCO is excited to announce that we will be participating in three workshops and one parallel session this year! More information on each event can be found below.
Workshops
- US-Chile Collaboration - Sunday, August 18, 2024 - 2pm to 6pm local time
- Antarctic early career research priorities to inform International Polar Year discussions - Friday, August 23, 2024 - 9:45am to 11:15am local time
- Synergistic approach to addressing DEI issues; learning from different contextual initiatives - Friday, August 23, 2024 - 2pm to 3:30pm local time
Parallel Session
- Is Antarctic science ready to help tackle urgent global issues? Perspectives on strengthening equitable science communities - Thursday, August 22, 2024 - 4pm to 5:40pm local time
The US-Chile Collaboration Workshop will help participants learn how to build cross-cultural competency, how to build successful international scientific collaborative relationships, and how to apply for funding with international research partners in mind. Those who attend will also get the chance to work together with polar researchers from a country other than the one they are based in, with the goal of creating disciplinary and cross-disciplinary relationships which may lead to future collaboration. You can learn more about this workshop and how to apply to attend here. Applications are due July 24, 2024.
The Antarctic early career research priorities to inform International Polar Year discussions Workshop will focus on developing a first draft of big scientific questions to prioritize as the International Polar Year (IPY) approaches in 2032-2033. Outcomes from the brainstormed ideas at the workshop will be collated and used to inform world summit planning conversations in 2025. You can learn more about this workshop here.
The Synergistic approach to addressing DEI issues; learning from different contextual initiatives Workshop will dive into 1) how diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts vary across different international contexts; 2) exploring with those in attendance how we can learn from one another across countries about how to welcome all into the Antarctic research community; and 3) creating a plan for pursuing DEI action through coordinated, synergistic activities. You can learn more about this workshop here.
The Parallel Session will include collaborating globally with individuals of varied disciplines, specialities, lived experiences, and backgrounds to effectively investigate the greatest questions in our fields that would have a global impact. To achieve this, it is critical that every Antarctic, and more broadly polar, research-related institution works to build welcoming Antarctic communities and working environments, in which barriers to participation are removed and all contributors are able to thrive in a safe environment. You can learn more about this session here.
