AGU 2025 Incorporating Early Career Perspectives into 5th International Polar Year Goals- Takeaways from the Polar Early Career World Summit
Join PSECCO at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in New Orleans, LA, on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 for a panel discussion that runs from 4.15 pm to 5.45 pm CDT. Mariama Dryák-Vallies, PSECCO Director, will be presenting on the takeaways from the global Polar Early Career World Summit (PECWS), which calls for the consideration of how we do research alongside of what we research - so as to advance more welcoming and sustainable polar research environments for all polar researchers in years to come.
Session Description:
"The 5th International Polar Year (IPY, 2032-2033) provides a critical opportunity to engage polar early career scientists in the future of polar research. The establishment of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) during the 4th International Polar Year (IPY) launched an international and interdisciplinary support structure for early career scientists that has few precedents in other fields. Including polar early career voices in planning and discussions around the 5th IPY, presents an unprecedented opportunity for meaningful and proactive engagement. In March 2025 the Polar Early Career World Summit (PECWS) took place in conjunction with the Arctic Science Summit Week and brought together over 200 early career polar scientists in person and online to develop a vision for the future of polar science. This input process was collaboratively organized and guided by the Polar Science Early Career Community Office and APECS. Here we present a synthesis from the input process and its associated output report. We will share an overview of the 12 thematic priority areas for the IPY identified by participants and suggest ways in which this can be actionably included in planning discussions."
